History of the Company
ATS Bullion came into being in 2002, but it had existed for much longer than that under a different name. The company had worked as the bullion department of Spink & Sons, which was formed in 1666. When Spink was sold in 2002, the company acquiring it decided that the bullion department would close.
But longtime clients of the precious metals industry heard about the closure. Rather than let the employees lose their jobs, they bought the department so that it could be fashioned into its own independent company.
ATS Bullion did most of its trading with Spink for the first four years of its existence. But then it expanded to the point that a relocation was necessary. Now they operate out of the Savoy Court building in London.
About ATS Bullion
ATS Bullion specializes in buying and selling gold and silver. They only deal with investment grade products that people would want in their portfolios. Some of their biggest focuses are on Good Delivery gold bars and bullion coins.
The company says that it cares about maintaining its reputation by providing a high level of expertise and customer service. They want customers to be satisfied no matter whether they're selling or buying.
The company does mention that they can't give guarantees about the price of gold. But the representatives are able to advise you about which purchases might be best for your overall goals, based on the historical performance data.
Educational resources are also available on the website, including a guide to gold investment for beginners.
When you go to the company website, you'll find that a huge number of different items are available. There are gold coins, gold bars, silver bullion, platinum products, and even coin accessories. Because the company is so large and well-established, it has an incredibly diverse inventory.
For example, you can browse gold coins by categories like:
When you browse gold bars, you can choose to sort them by weight or price. Alternatively, you can look at just Metalor gold bars.
The company's selection of silver isn't quite as robust, but you can still browse by bars or coins. You can also look at the best priced silver if your goal is to get as much silver as possible on a limited budget.
The platinum products are extremely limited. As of writing, there are only two items listed on the website. Of those, only the One Ounce Maple Leaf is in stock. So if you're looking for platinum and palladium, this might not be the best company to work with.
The available coin accessories come in boxes or tubes. There are gift boxes that come in a huge array of different colors. The tubes are meant to hold rolls of coins so that they're protected from the elements. Another section of the website lets you browse gift products.
Selling to the Company
Some bullion dealers will not purchase precious metals from individuals. But that isn't the case for ATS Bullion. While many of the sales transactions are done in person, you can also send the bullion by mail with an insured delivery.
The company says that they want to make sure that customers are given honest and fair pricing. If you want to know about the current offers for gold bars and coins, you can call their customer service line.
Over the Counter
If you are in the London area, you can go directly to the office. You should make sure that you have your ID on you. It's possible that you will be asked to provide multiple forms of ID if you are selling a large amount of gold.
When you get to the counter, you will talk to one of the company's bullion dealers. This person will show you the current price of the metals and explain what price they are willing to buy at.
If you agree with the price, all you have to do is choose the method of payment. You can either have a check, bank wire transfer, or cash. Keep in mind that there are some limitations on the cash purchases.
Through the Mail
You'll send your items through the mail to ATS Bullion. Make sure that you have the package fully insured, so that you can be reimbursed if the items are lost in the mail. The company recommends using Royal Mail Special Delivery.
You must put a note or letter inside the package that explains that you want to sell the bullion.
Once the package arrives, a bullion dealer will call you and give you a price quote. You can choose to have the payment sent as a check by mail or as a bank wire transfer. The bank wire transfer is the fastest option.
Is ATS Bullion a Scam?
ATS Bullion is not a scam. The company has provided transparent information about its managing director, headquarters, and mission. There are several hundred positive customer reviews available online, with consumers consistently praising the high quality service and staff knowledge.
As the company is based in London, it doesn't have a page with the Better Business Bureau. But it appears to have a good reputation within the UK precious metals market. In addition, it became an independent company after hundreds of years as a subsidiary of Spink & Sons.
That means that ATS Bullion is one of the oldest bullion dealers in the world. They take that honor very seriously.
Pros & Cons of ATS Bullion
ATS Bullion seems to be one of the best bullion dealers in the London area. They have an extremely long history, having been part of Spink & Sons since 1666. That makes them older than any other bullion dealer today. And they seem to have kept up with the times, at least judging by the positive customer feedback they get.
If you're in the London area, this company is definitely worth checking out. But it seems like they do most of their business in person. In addition, even when they do work online, their clientele tends to be mostly European. So if you're an American looking for a bullion dealer, you might want to go with one closer to home.
Overall, we believe that there is a better option when it comes to your investment.
